Reasons for wasting this valuable employee benefit are really just excuses - too much to do at the office, no one to cover you, cannot coordinate time with other family members, not enough funds for a vacation. But, we all really need to take vacations, or at the very least, time away from the office.
Time spent recreationally improves health, helps build and foster personal relationships, and it has been proven that upon return from vacation, workers have a fresh outlook and are more productive. Many countries have vacation policies that are much more liberal than those here in the United States. And, the working Americans of 40 years ago took more vacation than we do today. We really need to change our attitudes!
If it is the cost of a vacation that precludes your clients from traveling, remind them that they are losing more money than they would spend on a trip by not taking off the time they are entitled to. And, there are so many travel deals for families - especially in the summer months - that it makes no sense not to do something. Market these great summer deals to those clients who seem chained to their desks. They (and their families) will thank you.
For the clients who really cannot get away for more than a few days, there are so many fantastic local hotel summer specials - even a long weekend away to rest and rejuvenate may be just what they need.
We hope that you include travel plans for yourself on your to-do list, and take a much-needed getaway this summer. All those piles on your desk will still be there when you get back. Take some time to enjoy the sun and fun. I plan to!
