Dubai, Soaring to new Heights

With a new global marketing campaign launching this year and an accolade naming this Emirate one of the top 25 places to go worldwide, Dubai has certainly come a long way from the financial troubles that plagued the city back in 2009. There are new airline routes to announce and a summer campaign to attract both business and leisure travelers. We’ll break it all down for you here, giving you the latest information on this
fascinating destination.

Dubai’s hotels welcomed more than 11 million guests in 2013 - an increase of just over one million on the 2012 numbers, and a positive indication that Dubai is on the way to achieving its target of welcoming 20 million visitors a year by 2020.

The range of hotel openings throughout 2013 provides a testament to this level of growth. The openings included the Barjeel Heritage Guest House in Bur Dubai; a number of two, three and four star properties including Vida Downtown Dubai, Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Novotel Hotel Al Barsha; five-star hotels in the city such as Conrad and Oberoi; and two new five-star resorts on the Palm Jumeirah, Sofitel and Anantara. The total number of hotels grew from 599 at the end of 2012 to 611 at the end
of 2013.

Tourism Stats
Named as one of the top 25 places go worldwide in the Traveler Choice Awards 2014 by TripAdvisor, Dubai welcomed more than 7.9 million visitors between January and September 2013, a 9.8 percent year-on-year increase. With the launch of new flight routes and a full calendar of world-class events, 2014 is slated to be Dubai’s best year yet.

Along with the impressive number of visitors, Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing debuted a new brand for the destination. The new logo, launched at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), features the word ‘Dubai’ written in both the Arabian and Roman alphabets, reflecting the city’s rich multiculturalism. Announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the brand will be used by government departments and bodies, ensuring that the emirate speaks with ‘one voice’ to its citizens and visitors. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed stated, “today we launched Dubai’s new brand identity which will be used to promote our city regionally and internationally. The new brand identity focuses on Dubai being a credible, unique and welcoming destination for tourists and visitors.”

This summer, Dubai is offering visitors a remarkable summer experience featuring a packed calendar of entertainment, festivals and cultural celebrations to entertain all the family. Lasting from June 15th to September 6th, “Summer is Dubai 2014” offers festivals and events for everyone. Airline News
Emirates Airlines launched daily service between Boston and Dubai on March 10th, 2014 with the airline’s eighth route into the United States, ninth into North America and twelfth into the Americas. The flight will be operated by a Boeing 777-200LR, and brings the winner of the Skytrax World’s Best Airline 2013 award into Boston Logan International Airport on a daily basis.

Etihad Airways recently voted the World’s Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards, will add two new destinations to their U.S. network in 2014. Daily service from Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi begins on Jun. 1, while three weekly flights will launch from Dallas-Fort Worth on Dec. 1st. With these new routes, Etihad will offer service from six North American destinations, including Toronto, New York, Chicago and Washington D.C.
